Event 2 || Maru Garcia's Vivarium
In Maru Garcia’s “Vivarium: A Place of Life,” the artist attempts
to bridge the gap between humanity and nature, demonstrating that nature and
humanity are interconnected through her construction of mini biospheres. In the
dark room, there are two projectors on the wall that shows images of the biospheres.
In one of the biospheres, there were various natural organism, plants, and
moss. In the other biosphere, there was a performer engaging inside the
biosphere, interacting and engaging with his surroundings by eating some of the
grass, grazing across the moss and feeling the humidity of the atmosphere. Both
of these biospheres were self-sustainable and demonstrated the beauty of nature
and the environment and how we as humans are connected to it in various ways -
whether by eating or experiencing or living in it.
This event helped me better understand how humanity and
environmental sustainability was connected and can be bridged together. Better
understanding the environment and how it relates to us humans allows us to be
more resourceful in being able to develop technology and advance as a society
by using the environment to our advantage. At the same time, better
understanding the environment and how it relates to us humans allows us to be
more respectful of nature and try to advance in a way that does not compromise
the sustainability of the environment.
I would recommend this event to other students because it helped
me understand how my actions really help or hurt the environment and nature
itself. It makes me more aware of where I place my trash and if I actually
recycle or not.
